第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A

One day, when I was working as a psychologist(心理学家) in England,

a teenager showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale,

and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. “This boy has lost his family,” he wrote. “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I’m very worried about him. Can you help him?”

I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems that psychology doesn’t have the answer to,

and no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically(同情地). The first two times we met,David didn’t say a word. He sat there,

only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon—

in complete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy to cheat in chess,

but I admit I made sure David won once or twice. Usually,he arrived earlier than agreed,

took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?

“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, when we were playing chess,he looked up at me suddenly. “It’s your turn,”he said. After that day,

David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times about his biking with some friends,

and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.

Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that o

ne—without any words—

can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug,a shoulder to cry on,a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.

21. When he first met the author,David________.

A.showed up with his teacher

B.looked a little nervous C.walked energetically D.felt a little excited

A.was confident about psychology

B.was sure of solving David’s problem

C.was ready to listen to David

D.was able to describe David’s problem

23. David enjoyed being with the author because he________.

A.liked the children’s drawings in the office

B.beat the author many times in the chess game

C.wanted to ask the author for advice

D.needed to share sorrow with the author

24. What can be inferred about David?

A.He recovered after months of treatment.

B.He liked biking before he lost his family.

C.He went into university soon after starting to talk.

D.He got friends in school before he met the author. B

Young women who take part in beauty contest (比赛) are helping to keep alive an outdated opinion of women that a woman’s most important value is how she looks.

Women have been working very hard through the years to ch

ange their image. They have been trying to prove that the value of a woman does not lie only in her beauty. The world is just beginning to recognize that women are as smart, wise and strong in personality as men are, and that there are qualities more important than looks when judging people. When women take part in beauty contests for top prizes, they encourage people to value them for their beauty alone. It is unfair to say that beauty alone determines one’s worth.

Beauty contests not only encourage spectators(观众) to judge women by their appearance, but they encourage this idea in the contestants as well. These young women spend months losing weight to be the “right” size and learning how to dress, wear makeup, and walk just right so that some judges will consider them beautiful. I think it’s greater for a woman to feel good about her appearance, but looks shouldn’t be sought after in an extreme or unreasonable way. There are too many other, more important things in a young woman’s life: learning, developing friendships and preparing for their future work and perhaps a family.

As long as there are beauty contests, women won’t be fully recognized as well-rounded human beings.

According to the text, women have tried to change their image

by___________.

paying attention to their clothes proving they are as good as men

encourage people to value their beauty winning more beauty contests

What do women usually do in preparation for beauty contests?

Choose the right size dresses. Learn about their personality. Do everything for their bodies. Develop friendship with spectators. What can we infer from the text?

Qualities other than looks are more important. Looks determine everything. Wisdom carries much weight.

Spectators should have their voice heard.

According to the author, beauty contests are _________. necessary for modern society unpleasant to contestants disrespectful to women

helpful in improving women’s image D

Some people surveyed tasted the sweet, salty, and crunchy together with other tastes of food as they listen to different noises. It shows that louder noises reduced the reported sweetness or saltiness of food while increasing the measure of crunchiness(松脆).

It may go some way to explain why airline food is widely complained about by both the workers and passengers. Andy Woods, a researcher, said, “It’s a general opinion that plane foods aren’t fantastic, but I’m sure airlines do their best, so we wondered if there were other reasons. One thought was that perhaps the background noise may have an effect. NASA gives their space explorers very strong-tasting food, because for some reasons, they can’t taste food that strongly—

again, it may have something to do with the background noise.”

In a study, 48 people were fed sweet foods or salty ones, while listening to nothing or noise through earphones. Meanwhile they rated(划分等

级) the foods. In noisier settings, foods were rated less salty or sweet than they were when it was silent, but were rated crun

chier. “The evidence shows that if the background noise is loud, your attention might be drawn to that, away from the food.” Dr. Woods said.

“We are still at an early stage of progressing and this is a rather small study to really draw definitive(最完整可靠

的) conclusions from,” Dr Woods said, “but they suggest that restaurants could well adapt their choice of food for a given environment.”

Also in the group’s findings there is the suggestion that the overall satisfaction with the food is also related to the degree to which people like what they are hearing.

32. How does the food taste when it is eaten in a noisy environment?

A. Less salty but crunchier. B. Sweeter but less crunchy.

C. Sweeter and saltier. D. Less sweet and crunchy.

33. Why does NASA give their space explorers very strong-tasting foods?

A. The explorers lose their sense of taste in space. B. Foods become less tasty in space.

C. The explorers need tastier foods to keep energetic in spac

e.

D. Loud noises in space may weaken the explorers’ sense of taste.

34. We can infer from what Dr. Woods said in the 4th paragraph that ___________.

A. the researchers have made an effective conclusion B. the environment influences the food a restaurant sells C. listening to nothing while eating is the best choice D. music will weaken people’s sense of taste while eating 35. What would be the best title for the text? A. How to change plane foods B. The best dinner environment

C. Background noise affects the taste of foods D. Listening to music while eating

again, it may have something to do with the background noise.”

In a study, 48 people were fed sweet foods or salty ones, while listening to nothing or noise through earphones. Meanwhile they rated(划分等

级) the foods. In noisier settings, foods were rated less salty or sweet than they were when it was silent, but were rated crunchier.

C. The explorers need tastier foods to keep energetic in space.
