Mark Twain once said:“A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”
This is especially true when talking about fake(虚假的)news.
In a new study, researchers from MIT found that lies and fake news spread faster and farther than true stories on social media(社交媒体). They studied more than 126,000 stories with 3 million users on Twitter. They found out that fake stories often reached between 1,000 and 100,000 people, but true stories reached just a little over 1,000.
According to Metro, this may be because fake news can easily catch people’s attention. Fake news stories often refer to controversial(有争议的),widely-discussed topics. They also contain new and unexpected content. Fake news stories are more sensational(耸人听闻的)and might make people feel angry or surprised.
In 2017, the Wenzhou Evening News reported that a girl was not allowed to take her college entrance exam because she was two minutes late. Many Internet users became angry after hearing this, believing that the school was being unreasonable. But in fact, the girl was 17 minutes late. Students are usually allowed to take the exam as long as they arrive no later than 15 minutes after the exam starts. But the girl was two minutes later than allowed.
Some social media sites have taken action to stop fake news. The best thing for users to do is to think critically(辩证地)and check carefully before sharing a story.

1. e________ 2. s________ 3. b________ 4. s________ 5. S________ 6. P________ D. Answer the questions. Dear Friend,
I want to tell you about Yuri. Yuri is a young brown bear. He was born in winter and like all bear cubs, he was blind and he had no teeth. His mother was sleeping in her den(兽穴),deep inside the Russian forest. Outside, it was very cold and everything was covered by thick snow. Inside the den with his mother, however, Yuri felt safe and warm.
Then, when Yuri was only a few weeks old, some hunters came. Dogs were sent into the den. Yuri’s mother was woken up by the dogs. She tried to protect her cub, but when she climbed out of the den, she was shot by the hunters.
Every year, between 3,000 and 4,000 brown bears are hunted and killed like this. There are only 110,000 brown bears in Russia today and they almost disappear in other European countries. Their meat and fur are sold for thousands of dollars, so people will continue to hunt them. The cubs are usually just left to die. Without their mothers, they can’t survive(生存).
Yuri, however, was lucky. He was found by one of the hunters and he was taken to The Russian Bear Orphanage, 350 kilometers northwest of Moscow. The orphanage is run by Professor Valentin Pazhetnov. Here, Yuri will be looked after. He and other orphan bears will be fed and taught how to survive. When they are old enough, people will send them to a nature reserve in Bryansk, where they will be safe. Professor Pazhetnov hopes that in the future some bears will be released(释放)in other European countries where they are now extinct(灭绝).
So far, over a hundred bear cubs have been by the orphanage. Seventy bears have been returned to the forest. We want to save more. That’s why I’m writing to you now. Money is needed for food, traffic and for people to look after the baby bears. Yuri and his friends need your help. Please tend a donations(捐赠)today. Together we can save the orphan bears. Thank you.
Yours sincerely, Fred
